How it differs from a chatbot
A chatbot answers inside a chat window. An agent can take steps: look up data, fill in a form, draft a message and wait for approval before it sends. An agent builder is the product you use to set that up, without writing the whole program yourself.
How it differs from workflow automation
Workflow tools run steps that you lay out in advance, in a fixed order. Many AI agent builders add a model that decides which step or tool to use next. Some products do both. The line between the two is blurry, so the awards score what a product does and publishes, not the label it uses.
How it differs from a code framework
A framework is a code library you install in your own project. You write the logic, host the agent and manage the data flow. A hosted builder gives you a setup screen or a chat, and runs the agent for you. The awards rank hosted and no-code builders. Code-only frameworks are not ranked. Some products sit in both groups, and those are ranked on their hosted platform.
Scope for the word “agent”
In this guide and on this site, an agent is AI software that runs a task. It is not a real estate agent, a construction agent, or a person who buys goods for you. Those meanings come up in search results, and they are outside this topic.
What a builder should do
- Connect to outside tools, such as search, social platforms, sales data and media generation, and say which ones.
- Start from a plain-language description of the task.
- Run on a schedule, or keep working after you close the app.
- Ask a person to approve before it takes an outside action.
- Show what each run did, with the tools it used and the steps it took.
- State the free start, the plans and the usage in public.

Frequently asked questions
Is an AI agent builder the same as an AI agent?
They are close but not the same. The builder is the product you use to make an agent. The agent is the running set of steps the builder produces, which picks tools and carries out a task.
Do I need to write code to use an AI agent builder?
Not for the hosted, no-code products ranked on this site. Some products also offer a code option for developers, and that is noted in the research files.
What tasks do AI agent builders handle?
Market research, competitor review, lead lists, content drafts, outreach and social monitoring are common in the products reviewed. The tools a builder can reach decide which tasks it can do.
